Thank you as always for letting us know. Any news on the Syriac side?

Tom,
I really appreciate your French-Canadian keyboard - the first link on this page: http://m10lmac.blogspot.com/2009/11/three-keyboards-for-canadian-french.html

I use it continually, it saved my Mac from obsolescence! But can you see if it's still usable with Lion?

Cheers,
Michel

michel -- sorry, I don't know when I will be able to test that. But normally there is no reason that a keyboard layout would stop working in Lion.

Tom, I don't see any reason either... except that when I upgraded to Leopard, the FC Keyboard 0.9 (the one that was included in System 9) didn't work anymore with my favorite dictionary, Antidote. Go figure! I still don't know if it depends on OS X, or on the Antidote developers not applying all the rules. Anyway, they couldn't provide any help, and your keyboard was my lifesaver! Thanks again. Perhaps some other user can test the keyboard with Lion? Anybody?

It was just pure luck that any OS 9 keyboard ever worked in OS X. They are totally different animals.

The system 9 keyboard might rely on Rosetta for PPC, dropped in Lion?

Chris -- I think system 9 keyboards stopped working in 10.5 Leopard already (as michel said for his).

I am having trouble getting half form characters in Devanagari - (halant). These ran correctly in an earlier version. Thank you for your advice.

anon -- please email me a screenshot in large font size showing examples of the problem you are seeing (tom at bluesky dot org).

I’m not sure if anyone has noticed but non-AAT Unicode fonts of South Asian scripts now seem to work fine with Lion. For example the only Devanagari fonts that would work before was Apples Devanagari MT however now Sanskrit 2003 works just fine.

I think this is a major step forward that Lion allows for the use of both AAT and non-AAT Unicode fonts of complex scripts.

Greg -- Wow, that is something new! But it seems to be only in TextEdit, not in Pages/Keynote or OpenOffice or TextWrangler for example. Nisus Writer does work.

Greg said...

Tom you are correct it seems only to work with Textedit (I don’t have Nisus Writer), someone should check Mellel also. Of course MS Word and Excel also still do not work.

On average, the new languages supported with both fonts and keyboards have each a little less than 60 million speakers. Amharic is the official language of a country that has 85 million people and it is supported only with fonts. Should it not be fair to support it with keyboard as well? Thanks.

Geez Online -- Of course Apple should provide an Amharic font. To tell them you want this, go to

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

and in the meantime see
